A field app for a utilities client
Designed and oversaw the user experience from inception to production for a tablet/mobile application used by hundreds of field workers to improve the reliability of energy for 3M+ retail customers across the Midwest and West.
Due to the nature of this work, I'm unable to share visuals publicly — happy to walk through it live.
Problem
Field workers tracked electric/gas inspections on pen and paper — slow, error-prone, and disconnected from the company's broader data transformation.
Approach
Owned UX end-to-end for a tablet/mobile field app — a live asset map, dynamic inspection forms, and a supporting design system.
Impact
Improved energy reliability for 3M+ customers across the Midwest and West; hundreds of field workers trained onto the new workflow.
Background
I modernized how field workers conduct inspections, report issues, and respond to emergencies on electric and gas assets — replacing pen and paper with a fully integrated tablet/mobile app, as part of a larger digital and data transformation.
What I created
- Interactive prototypes centered on a live asset/issue map and dynamic, asset-specific inspection forms
- Inspection experience adapted per asset type (data, verbiage, photo requirements, regulations) while staying consistent at the core
- Built and maintained the app's design system for consistency across inspection types
- Partnered with client stakeholders on requirements and developers on technical feasibility
- Documented functionality and co-led user training as the app went live
Value add
- Improved accuracy of data and reduced time spent collecting and logging it
- Improved contextual awareness from a frequently updated map of all assets and issues
- Ability to reallocate resources and field workers based on changing conditions or emergencies
- Ability to respond to emergencies while in the field
