Dom's Kitchen & Market: a coffee & grocery app redesign

A personal redesign of the mobile app for my favorite grocery store in Chicago, focused on making the daily coffee order faster and more personal.

Problem

Ordering a daily coffee took ~10 taps, with no way to save favorites — every visit started from scratch.

Approach

Redesigned ordering, cart, and profile around one idea: remember what you always get, and surface it first.

Impact

10 taps → 4 taps for a repeat coffee order, with full browsing still one tap away for the weekly grocery run.

Overview

Dom's Kitchen & Market is my favorite grocery store in Chicago — great groceries, a made-to-order coffee bar, friendly staff. The one weak link was the mobile app, "Dom's GO," which made regulars re-decide their whole order every single visit. I redesigned it around speed and personalization for the daily user, without losing the full browsing experience for the weekly grocery run.

  • "For You" section surfacing frequently and recently ordered items
  • Saved default preferences — roast, milk, pickup location, ASAP pickup — that pre-fill every order
  • Dom's existing blue palette carried over so the app still feels like the store

The transformation

Old app Redesign
10 taps to get a drip coffee 4 taps, thanks to preset preferences
No way to reorder favorites "For You" surfaces most- and recently-ordered items first
Full customization list every order Defaults set once in Settings, always overridable
Pickup location/time reselected every order Defaulted, changeable with one dropdown
Cluttered, unclear layout Simplified layout that highlights products first

What I designed

Ordering

Simple, image-first browsing. Tapping an item shows price, rewards-based discount eligibility, and customization — pre-filled from the user's saved defaults, always overridable.

Cart

A straightforward summary — edit or swipe-to-delete any item, pay with Stars (Dom's reward points) or a discount code. Payment, pickup location, and pickup time default from the user's profile but stay editable.

Profile

Where the personalization lives: rewards status (Foodie, Sous Chef, Master Chef) with perks and progress to the next tier, plus every default that Ordering and Cart pull from.

Reflection

Designing without a client brief meant I could chase small personalization details — like remembering a preferred roast — that don't always survive a scoped engagement, but make a real difference in how a daily-use app feels.
